Fortunate Son by Creedence Clearwater Revival
Song Lyrics: Some folks are born to wave the flag,
Ooh, they're red, white and blue.
And when the band plays "Hail to the chief",
Ooh, they point the cannon at you, Lord,
It ain't me, it ain't me, I ain't no senator's son, son.
It ain't me, it ain't me; I ain't no fortunate one, no,
Yeah!
Some folks are born silver spoon in hand,
Lord, don't they help themselves, oh.
But when the taxman comes to the door,
Lord, the house looks like a rummage sale, yes,
[ Lyrics from
It ain't me, it ain't me, I ain't no millionaire's son, no.
It ain't me, it ain't me; I ain't no fortunate one, no.
Some folks inherit star spangled eyes,
Ooh, they send you down to war, Lord,
And when you ask them, "How much should we give?"
Ooh, they only answer More! more! more! yoh,
It ain't me, it ain't me, I ain't no military son, son.
It ain't me, it ain't me; I ain't no fortunate one, one.
It ain't me, it ain't me, I ain't no fortunate one, no no no,
It ain't me, it ain't me, I ain't no fortunate son, no no no,

The language of the song that stands out to me is the line “Some folks inherit star spangled eyes,” because this is pointing out the fact that some people are given the task by their forbears through the draft to be the patriotic soldier that fights for their country. The song presents the war as something that takes advantage of those who have no public or political power and uses them to fight the battles of the rich. This song is against the foreign policy of the Truman Doctrine because it is being critical of the people who start the war and choose that the people who appear to have nothing, such as riches, to carry out the orders of the government. This song answers the question, “What is the cost of war?” because it is saying the cost of war is the the families who are poverty stricken or don't have the political influence that many other people that avoid the draft by paying large sums of money. I agree with the song”s message because it doesn't target the troops who have no control over whether they are in the army or not, but it does target the politicians and rich people who have the money and influence to keep their families and themselves to avoid going to war.
